Urine Removal Process

In our previous article, which you can find here,
we talked about how to find the pet urine in your carpet.
The first step with any good pet odor removal service is to
locate all of the urine - not just some of it.
The second step is REMOVE THAT URINE, which usually means removing the odor - but not always. We will explain this in more detail a bit later in this article.
Ok, So We Have Found The Urine - Now What?
Once the urine has been located the next step is to remove as much of that urine as possible. The goal is to remove all of the urine by thoroughly rinsing it out of the carpet and pad.
This is much easier said than done, but rinsing the urine out of your carpet can be accomplished (most of the time) with the right tools.
Tools Used To Remove Urine From The Carpet and Pad
The tools used to REMOVE the urine from the carpet and pad are fairly simple, they are the following:
1. A Water Claw Flood Extraction Tool
2. Cleaning Agents Designed to Breakup and Dissolve The Urine
Let's start with the Water Claw (or a similar tool).

Large Water Claw

Mini Water Claw
The Water Claw is a flood extraction tool, used mostly for dealing with floods, but it can also be used for "flood extracting" substances out of carpets and pads.
This tool is designed to remove LARGE amounts of water from the carpet
and pad - much more than you could remove just using a hose or wand.
We will not get into the mechanics of why this tool works so well but, trust us, it does a wonderful job of removing water and other substances from a variety of surfaces.
The reason we use the Water Claw is because it allows us to literally flood
the contaminated areas of the carpet with water and the cleaning agents we
are going to use to break up the urine deposits.
It is important to understand that "regular" carpet cleaning is rarely successful at removing pet urine odor from your carpet. The carpet needs to be rinsed and cleaned with specialty tools and cleaning agents.
Do not let any carpet cleaner tell you that "normal" cleaning is going to deliver good results. They might cover the odor up for a day or two, but it will be back.
Urine deposits can be really hard to flush from the carpet, and almost impossible to flush from the pad without using a flood extraction tool.
So when we find an area of urine, we mark that area and then proceed to flush the carpet with large amounts of the cleaning agent.
The Water Claw allows us to pull our cleaning agent, and the urine, out of the
carpet without leaving too much water in the carpet.
We continue this rinsing process until we are convinced that we have done about everything we can to remove as much urine as possible from the carpet.
In many cases we have removed all of the urine deposits. This makes the next step super effective - but we will get to that step in just a bit.
The second tool is the cleaning agents used to dissolve the urine deposits.
Just using water to rinse the urine deposits can work at times, but most of the time the process is much easier, and more successful, if you use specialty cleaning agents that are designed to break up the urine deposits.
There are a number of cleaning agents we use to perform the urine extraction, and what we use, and what order we use these cleaning agents, is up to us and what we feel is the best way to go about removing the urine.
Typically we will use one of the urine removal agents, along with a LOT of water, and flood extract the spot. You can see the video below.
As you can see from the video, there is no way you would apply that much water, or cleaning agent, to a carpet without the ability to get almost all of it back. This is the advantage of the Water Claw Flood Extraction Tool when dealing with rinsing urine from the carpet.
These specialty cleaning agents not only help in removing most of the urine, but they can also aid in actually negating any remaining urine odor.
There are times where we want to leave some of the urine removal cleaning agents, such as when we use enzymes, because these agents continue to work and neutralize odor over an extended period of time.
But we want to make this clear:
Just covering up urine odor is NOT good pet odor control. The key is to get out as much of the urine as possible and then, if needed, to allow any remaining urine to be dealt with.
What Are The Cleaning Agents We Use To Remove Urine From Carpet?
Well, since we know some of our competitors are here reading this article we are not going to divulge what we use.
But we want to make this clear: the cleaning agents we use to remove the urine and odor from your carpet are very effective and safe. When used properly, in the right order, we have a very high success rate in removing urine odor from any carpet.
Does The Pad Have To Be Replaced?
The honest answer is: Sometimes, but not always.
In fact, the Water Claw allows us to rinse very high amounts of the urine out of the carpet and pad, and even reach the sub-floor.
This type of "top down" extraction lessons the need to pull the carpet up, replace the pad, and seal the sub-floor; which can be very expensive.
But there are going to be times where there is so much urine in the carpet that top-down pet odor removal is just not going to be successful.
In those cases the carpet will have to be pulled up, the backing treated, the pad replaced, and the sub-floor treated and sealed.
And yes, we do that type of urine decontamination at Linton's Carpet Cleaning.
But, again, we are very successful at removing urine odor from carpets without having to do all of that. And by using effective top-down urine removal techniques we can also save you a lot of money and time.
