In this article we are going to go over pet dander odor in carpet.
Pet dander odor, especially from dogs, is a very common problem in carpet, and it does NOT have anything to do with urine or feces issues in carpet.
Pet dander odor is basically the odor from a dog or cat (could be other pets), that is caused from four main sources of the pet.
Pet dander is a very distinct odor and can be minor; or so bad you don't want to be in the home.
Either way, in this article we are going to go over how to deal with it.
So Let's Get Started
As we mentioned above; pet dander is caused by hair, skin cells, body oils,
and saliva that gets in the carpet over time. The biggest culprit is the hair of the animal and the body oils.
When dealing with pet dander it is super important to understand that "normal cleaning procedures" might not be enough to get rid of the pet dander.
And when we talk about "normal cleaning procedures" we are talking about normal carpet cleaning procedures.
But there is a problem with this: Normal carpet cleaning procedures can usually, if done right, deal with MINOR pet dander problems in carpet.
But if the pet dander odor is severe, then normal carpet cleaning procedures can actually make the odor worse - much worse.
The First Step To Getting Rid of Pet Dander In Carpets
1. As with all carpet cleaning (that is done correctly), the first step is to remove as much dry particulate soil as possible. So this means vacuuming the carpets THOROUGHLY. And when we say THOROUGHLY
we really mean it - the carpet needs to be vacuumed thoroughly!
Remember, the number contributor to pet dander is hair and skin cells.
So getting as much hair and skin cells out of the carpet, by vacuuming,
is a great FIRST step.
The hair usually has oils in it, and those oils stick to the fibers and then other soil stick to the oil. So getting the hair out of the carpet is a really important and a critical first step.
Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum!
By FAR the most important aspect of good carpet maintenance is to vacuum your carpet on a regular basis. Most soil in your carpet is dry particulate soil - which is best removed by vacuuming. So vacuum often - at least three times a week.
2. Use the proper cleaning agents to break down the body oils that the pet has left in the carpet.
It is not only important to break down the body oils in the carpet, but to also neutralize the odor from the body oils immediately. This is why "normal cleaning procedures" usually fail when dealing with severe pet dander odor in carpets.
The cleaning agents usually used for normal cleaning situations do not do a good job of neutralizing the pet dander odor.
3. Aggressive cleaning procedures. Not all carpets need to be cleaned with
really aggressive cleaning procedures, but with pet dander odor in carpets
aggressive cleaning is what is needed.
Any remaining hair, body oils, skin cells, and saliva MUST be cleaned out of the carpet. If not, the pet dander odor could end up being WORSE than before the carpet was cleaned.
4. Fast dry times. It is imperative that the carpet dry reasonably quick, and
by reasonably quick we mean within six to eight hours.
The longer the carpet takes to dry the more the moisture in the carpet has a chance to spur bacterial growth, and this leads to a REALLY bad smelling carpet.
Over the years we have seen numerous situations where clients have tried to
clean pet dander out of carpets themselves - only to make the situation a lot
worse.
And many times that was because they were using inferior cleaning equipment that did NOT get out enough of the hair, skin cells, body oils, and saliva and the carpet took far too long to dry.
So getting the carpet to dry fairly fast is really important.
5. Cleaning all surroundings. Just because the pet dander odor started in the carpet does not mean that is the only place the odor exist.
With severe pet dander odor in a room or home, the odor can actually be in, and on, many other furnishings.
The pet dander odor also be in or on the following:
A. Furniture, especially upholstered furniture.
B. Curtains
C. Walls
D. Literally any other object in the room or home.
If you have a severe pet dander odor problem then having your furniture and curtains professionally cleaned is a good idea.
Cleaning the walls of the room, or home, can also help out quite a bit.
Cleaning all surfaces of any object in the home, or room, might also be needed.
Sometimes cleaning pet dander odor out of carpet is very similar to cleaning a smoke damaged room.
But in the end run, if the carpets are cleaned the right way most pet dander odors can be effectively eliminated.
But what do you do AFTER the carpet has been cleaned and the pets are still in the home?
Well that is our next article. Be sure to check back to find out how to reduce; and maybe even totally eliminate, pet dander odor in carpets between carpet cleaning.
