This article will ONLY be about how to avoid pet dander odor in the first place.
So Let's Get Started
We will briefly (in case you have not read our other article on pet dander) go over what EXACTLY pet dander odor is.
What Is Pet Dander Odor?
Pet dander is the odor associated with pets, mostly dogs and cats, that is NOT related to urine or feces odors.
Many times pet dander odors are described as "wet dog odors" or something similar.
Pet dander odors are caused by a build up of four main substances:
Pet dander odor can be extremely minor to really bad.
Ok, so now we know what pet dander odor is - how do we avoid it?
Avoiding Pet Dander Odor in Your Carpet and Home
If you have a number of pets in your home, especially dogs, then totally avoiding pet dander odor can be a bit difficult, but it can be done.
1. Make sure the pet is kept as clean as possible. This means giving
your dogs or cats (especially dogs) regular baths. This can make a huge
difference in whether you get mild pet dander odor in your home or
severe pet dander odor.
2. Vacuum. And we mean vacuum a lot! At least three to five times a week,
preferably more, is a good start.
Vacuuming your carpet is the single most important step you can take to
keep your carpet clean, and one of the most important steps to reducing
pet dander odor.
But vacuum the right way! Don't just quickly vacuum the carpet with a
vacuum cleaner that has plugged filters and doesn't work well to begin with.
Use a quality vacuum cleaner with HEPA filters and make sure those filters
are clean.
And take your time.
3. Occasionally, probably once a week or so, vacuum your carpet and then put down some powdered deodorizer that is made to reduce pet odors.
**But do this step the right way**
After you initially vacuum your carpet, then apply the powdered deodorizer
and let it sit in the carpet for about 15 minutes. If you have a carpet groomer
it would be a good idea to "rake" the deodorizer into the carpet.
After the powdered deodorizer has been in the carpet for about 15 minutes go
ahead and aggressively vacuum the carpet again. Really take your time to do this step - you will be rewarded in the long run.
It is very important that you vacuum out as much of the deodorizer as possible. You want to avoid leaving a heavy build-up of deodorizer because this could cause problems down the road when you have your carpets cleaned.
4. Make sure your HVAC system is clean and the filters are changed regularly.
The pet dander odor can easily end up being in your HVAC system. This can cause the home to smell like dog or cat even when the carpets have been cleaned.
5. Use a safe-level ozone machine.
Remember, if you can smell the pet dander it means those odor molecules are in the air.
A good ozone machine (designed to be used in homes with people living in them) can be a HUGE help in removing pet dander odors.
6. Make sure other furniture is also kept clean. Pet dander odor does not just occur in the carpet, it can literally be anywhere and everywhere.
The odor can be in your furniture, your curtains, and on the surfaces of your walls. Literally anywhere.
Make sure you keep other surfaces clean.
7. Have your carpets cleaned on a regular basis by a good professional carpet cleaning company.
Not all carpet cleaning companies understand the issues with pet dander odor. But high-quality companies understand how to clean carpets, that have pet dander issues, to avoid the carpet smelling even worse AFTER the carpet cleaning has been performed.
Be diligent with these steps and you will rarely have any type of serious pet dander odor in your home.
